Let’s face it: the styles of 2020 never got an airing because we were all working from home in our pajamas. There was no point in getting all dressed up when we had nowhere to go! It was against this backdrop that designers started to work on their 2021 collections, albeit in difficult conditions with their teams in far-flung corners of their living rooms. However, there is a lot of hope in the bright colors and bold designs of some of this summer’s must-haves. At the same time, it seems that some designers are still hedging their bets with practical, Zoom-friendly clothing. Here are the top five must-have pieces for summer 2021.
It is not really surprising that designers want to give us hope and make us feel better by giving us access to lots of bright, feel-good colors this season. Pink is especially popular, and the hotter the shade, the better. Bold patterns, such as that on these Yoshilady Paint Swirl Leggings, are back in fashion, and there is a special emphasis on rainbow patterns and colors as this symbolizes hope. Tie-dye is making a comeback for SS2021, and many designers have embraced this look this year. Matching tops and bottoms are particularly trendy right now, and nothing is considered too bold and brash for SS2021. The fashion world says to prepare to stand out and be noticed this year as you never got a chance to shine in last year’s summer fashions.
Tulle is making a wonderful and welcome comeback for SS2021. There are some beautiful pieces trending right now, with the emphasis on full skirts, flamboyance and catching up on the fun we missed out on last year. If we can celebrate the end of school this year, expect a lot of the prom queens to be wearing this material. Light, floaty and girly, it screams summer prom like no other material. The fabric can be created in either bold or muted colors depending on the taste of the individual. The Molly Goddard tulle dress in butter yellow is set to be especially popular and went viral almost immediately.
Hedging their bets in the pants department, loose, slouchy tailoring has been incredibly popular with designers for SS2021. These pants look great for a night out, or they can be worn in the office. If we are stuck indoors for part of the season, they will also feel comfortable enough to wear around the house or on a long Zoom call. Classics such as plain black pants are suitable for all of these occasions and can be worn with a crop top, such as this Yoshilady Women's Crop Tee, or a second-skin top to even out the look.
Jeans have also taken on an oversized appearance, with designer Victoria Beckham announcing that she practically lived in these during lockdown.
Voluminous sleeves have been popular for the past couple of seasons, but for SS2021, they have become bigger and bolder in the shoulder and arm department. Now they are making an even bigger statement. Wear these in bright colors for an up-to-the minute look. These look fabulous on dresses for that all-in-one look that can be thrown together in minutes for a trip to the office. Dress this look up with a pendant or chunky jewelry for a day at work. These sleeves will also jazz up your leggings, jeans or sweats and make you look fancy on a Zoom call while you remain comfortably dressed from the waist down.
Totes have taken the fashion world by surprise this year. Many observers thought that bags would not be popular as people had nowhere to take them, but practical oversized tote bags are a big hit right now. It may be precisely because everything can be thrown into the bag, which negates the need to change bags regularly to match our outfits, that they are so popular. Everything you need can simply be left inside the bag at all times, and all you have to do is just pick it up and go the next time you want to leave the house. Neutral shades such as fawn and soft grey are proving especially desirable for totes as they are easy to offset against the bolder patterns and colors of different clothing.
These are the top five must-have pieces for the summer of 2021, which will hopefully be long, hot and full of places to go and people to see so everyone can show off the latest fashion.
